TIPS ON BECOMING A BETTER
NIGHTCLUB DJ
1. Always play music that
will attract an older crowd into your club.....youth has energy and excitement,
but not much money....lets face it older crowds tip.
2. Have a nucleus of music that you know will pack your floor that will allow
you to add new music in without clearing it.
3. Stay on top of new
music and what the radio station you advertise with is playing for instance, if
you advertise with a top 40 station don't pound away with techno all night.
4. Switch it up! get everyone involved and rotate the dance
floor. I usually will play 3-5 songs of any one type and one off the wall track
to keep the floor packed and the bartenders busy.
5. Read your crowd, know your limits.... You want to play what they want to
hear, but you can also take them over the cliff and back again with new music
that they were not expecting or never heard.
The crowd is your guinea pig.. experiment
6. Shy away from theme nights....why make people go somewhere else to hear a
variety of music instead of hearing one kind all night. I see no need in giving
another club the opportunity in taking business from my club because I'm playing
disco all night
7. You don't have to beat mix everything you play. I feel programming is more
important, doing a slam at a break of a song with another that has a strong
intro is always great for crowd reactions. I have seen too many dj's mix songs
together just because the bpm's are the same or they go good together, your
crowd will tell you they don't care about these things when they get off the
floor.
8. Don't be afraid to break out the hits early in the night, how many times have
you waited until there is a crowd to hit them with the hot stuff? why make your
early crowd suffer with boring music? If you don't have an early crowd this is
an important lesson....i learned the hard way
9. Set a time for when your dance floor should be getting filled...I set mine at
10pm on the weekends.
10. You have a microphone....Use it! Be creative, get a reaction. Play the intro
of a song that you know gets screams, Stop it ,then ask them if they really want
to hear it. Its an old trick but has worked for decades.
